At the junction of Hawkins Street and Burgh Quay stands this memorial, unveiled on 3 August 1906 to Patrick Sheahan, a policeman who lost his life on 6 May 1905 in an heroic attempt to rescue John Fleming who had been working in the sewer of the new Main Drainage Works in which he had been overcome by gas.
Designed by P O'Neill. the 20-foot high limestone monument, relieved by pillars of Galway and Donegal granite, is topped by a cross emerging from a crown - symbolising sacrifice and triumph.
