James Went was one of the most influential head teachers of the Wyggeston Boys' School. Before coming to Leicester Went had been the Assistant Master at Bradford Grammar School, from which he came with excellent references. Went was well liked by the boys, many of whom used to return to the school to see their former master. Went, who ws ordained, was also a first class preacher and was often invited to take the pulpit at St Martin's.

  • James would have turned in his grave if he'd visited this building while it was up, one side of the building a half-a-floor height difference from the other and lift's unique to each side that didn't always work meant that students were forever moving up or down stairs. Add to that a paternoster that only worked to cause injuries to students before being shutdown permanently, a grey concrete exterior and windows that seem to have been an afterthought and you've got a building that should never have made it off the napkin it was doodled on.
