Cabbage Hill along Interstate 84

Travelers coming across the relatively flat plateau of the high Blue Mountains will find themselves descending the foothills through surprising twists and turns here at Cabbage Hill. When there is not fog, the last few corners offer a highly scenic view of the Columbia Basin below.

  • Also known as Emmigrant Hill on maps and in books, remembering the pioneers on the Oregon Trail who had to winch their wagons down this steep hill, the front range of the Blue Mountains. If you come from there, you still call it Cabbage Hill.
  • There are occastional barrels on the shoulder of the uphill (eastbound) lanes. In the summer, the barrels contain water for dealing with overheated engines. In the winter, they contain sand so travelers stuck by snow or ice can improve their traction to get unstuck.
