At 0600 hours on 20th July 1974 (the 1st day of the Turkish invasion) a company of paratroopers landed here. They should have landed 2 miles to the north-west at Mandres (a Turkish-Cypriot village within the Nicosia-Agyrta enclave), but instead they were accidentally dropped right on top of the local Greek-Cypriot defences and were massacred as a result. Out of the 120 paratroopers dropped, 93 were killed, 1 was captured and the survivors fled. |
