One of the many bridges crossing the Charles River, the Longfellow Bridge is among the most grand. It is familiarly known as the "Salt and Pepper Shaker Bridge", due to the shape of its four turrets. The Longfellow bridge, named after Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, connects Rte 3 and the MBTA Red line from Boston to Cambridge and serves as a major thoroughfare for vehicle traffic between the two cities.
Constructed between 1893-1906 and inspired by the 1893 Columbian Exposition, it was one of the first major bridges between the two cities.
