Thomas Graham Building (Glasgow)

department of chemistry / school of chemistry  Add category

Built 1962 as the new Chemistry Block of the Royal College of Science and Technology (which is why all the room numbers once upon a time started with "C"). It was built in tandem with the second phase of the James Weir Building which adjoins onto the eastern side - the site was once occupied by John Street Ironworks and an orphanage which were both demolished in the 1950s.

The chemistry labs were refurbished last year after a fire. Popularly believed to have been started in the same labs. At least one a semester you'll see students in lab coats running out the door - if you see this, run away at least as fast as they do. It's also a good shortcut to reach the James Weir behind it without having to climb that awful hill.
