Barony Hall (Glasgow)

United Kingdom / Scotland / Glasgow / Rottenrow East, 16
university, function hall, wedding / marriage venue, examination hall

The New Barony Church was originally built in 1899, as a replacement for the original, which was built a century earlier. One of very few buildings in all of Townhead that survived the ruthless "comprehensive development" of the 1960s when acres of tenements and other buildings were literally wiped off the map to make way for the new Strathclyde University and its supporting colleges. As more residents were displaced by the destruction, the Barony's congregation evaporated along with that of St Paul's on Martha Street (which already became absorbed into the University - or rather the Royal College as it still was - in the 1950s).

It enjoyed a minor revival in 1982 when it merged with the congregation of the old Ramshorn Church on nearby Ingram Street after that was also deconsecrated and sold to Strathclyde University the following year. Ironically, the Barony befell the same fate three years later in 1986, when it too was bought by the University. Three years were spent lovingly restoring the church and it has been used as a graduation hall, and for examinations. During the off-semester period, it can also be rented out as a wedding venue.
