If you visit Yogyakarta, it will never complete without tasting the Javanese traditional foods. You can also taste the Kings' foods. Nowadays, the favourite foods of the Kraton's Kings can be found easily in some places in Yogyakarta. One of them is if you pass Rotowijayan street, you will find a restaurant with Javanese building architecture.
Gadri Resto is the name of that restaurant which has succeeded in taking my attention. The first time I was there, the warm and friendly atmosphere welcomed me. The Javanese architecture (which is called Joglo), with a museum inside which saves many historical things, makes this restaurant looks more unique. A friendly and nice service also welcomed my arrival. Many kinds of menu which have high quality of taste and special Kraton culinary aroused my appetite. Many various questions I enquired to the waitress. I was interested in the names of the foods in this restaurant.
Blawong rice is the special food of Gadri Resto. Blawong rice is the favourite menu of HB VIII and XI. The rice which is mixed with many kinds of spice will more arouse our appetite if it is eaten with its supplements, i.e lombok kethok meat, laos fried chicken, fried salted egg. This combination menu can not be found in other restaurants. Other menus that you could taste are Langgi rice and Punar rice. As the dessert, you can taste Manuk Nom which is made from tape ketan ijo, fresh milk, egg, then steamed and served with emping mlinjo as its supplements. There is also Perawan Kenes, which is made from yellow kepok banana, tied with pandanus leaf and held with bamboo then cooked by steam. It is not complete if you do not taste the favorite beverages of HB IX, i.e secang and Javanese beer (no alcohol).
A bit talking about its history, Gadri Resto was established in 1984 and the founder was GBPH Joyokusumo, who is the brother of HB X. Recipes in this restaurant are the collections of Kraton's regeneration recipes and put into book form by BRAy Hj. Nuraida Joyokusumo, who is the wife of Gusti Joyokusumo. The perspective of Gadri Resto is to preserve the Javanese traditional foods in the middle of modernization era.
