Pennfield Ridge was established in mid-1941 as #2 Air Navigation School, later when #2 A.N.S. closed, #34 Operational Training Unit was established. Over 60 men died while training at Pennfield Ridge, with over 30 accidents/incidents reported. After the war, Pennfield Ridge was used by Trans-Canada Air Lines as the principal airport serving the city of Saint John. In 2006, a memorial was erected a few miles west of the airfield, to remember those that lost their lives at Pennfield Ridge (& Army Camp Utopia A-30). Currently, there is a research project underway to document the history of the airfield.
