| Pilgrim Monument This 252' tall structure was erected in 1907-1910 to memorialize Provincetown's role in the colonization of North America, specifically the first landing of the Mayflower with Pilgrim colonists from England. It is also the site of a museum, completed in 1910. The cornerstone of the tower was laid in 1907 by President Theodore Roosevelt and dedicated by President William Howard Taft in 1910. Constructed of solid Maine granite, it remains the tallest completely load-bearing masonry structure in North America. The staircase leading to the tower's campanille is adorned with commemorative stones which represent the contributions of Massachusetts cities and towns. www.pilgrim-monument.org/pilgrim_splash.html Category: monument mayflower provincetown pilgrims
