This is the vandalized gate that normally would have prevented anyone from going down here in the winter. It's easy to see why James Kim thought he was supposed to go right instead of left; Country Road 23 looks like just a little side road.

Per coverage on Oregon Live, the gate was never locked in the first place per the USDA Forest Service. It was left open because they did not want to trap anyone behind it, but was never rechecked and closed.
