Persian: جیرفت
is a city in Kerman province, Iran. It is located 230 kilometres south of the city of Kerman, and 1,375 kilometres south of Tehran. Its population is 209,746. In the past it was also called Sabzewaran, and on account of its being very fertile land it is famous as Hend-e-Koochak (literally: the little India).
Jiroft is located in a vast plain, Halil Rud, on the southern outskirts of the Bariz mountain chain, surrounded by two rivers. The mean elevation of the city is about 650 metres above sea level. The weather of the city is very warm in summer and temperatures are moderate in winter.
The remains of the old town of Jiroft are now only a kilometre away from the current city. The name "Jiroft" has recently become well known in archaeological circles, since Iran's Cultural Organisation announced the discovery of a millennia-old city buried near Jiroft (Jiroft civilization).

  • It is actually way more than a millennium old... it has been carbon dated to reveal its age of somewhere around late 4th millennium B.C. making it about -6500 years old. it should be noted that organic material above 6500 years was not found simply because it decayed in the hot climates of jiroft (Archeologists believe it may have been as old as 10000 yo but carbon dating does not confirm that) . Also there are mulitple layers in the ziggurat of jiroft indicating settlements from different periods. Weather or not it is the lost civilization of Arrata is at debate but one thing is for sure it came before Mesopotamia and will shift history accordingly. • P.s. this discovery marks the first major developed civilization (older than mesopotamia) with its own language and system for commerce. It has been under excavation for over 13 years and still they are in the beginning phases.
