The reserve consists of open grassland with undulating hills. The height above sea level is 1525 m (5000 feet) with the highest point at 1542 m and the lowest at 1475,84 m at the dam`s overflow. The supply of clean drinking water and the protection of the catchment area are the main reasons for the existents of the reserve. There are three sources of water on the reserve, namely the dam with the purification plant below the dam wall, 5 fountains and 5 boreholes. The reserve supplies approximately 15% of the city`s drinking water and that works out at around 40 million litres of water per day.
