Smokejacks Brickworks opened in the 1920s and was later known as Ockley and Ewhurst Works respectively. It is now owned by Weinerberger Plc and despite a multi-million pound refit in 1999, the works is now semi-dormant, employing only a skeleton staff.
In 1983 a new species of piscivorous (fish-eating) dinosaur, Baryonyx walkeri was discovered in the fossil-rich clay beds of the quarry pit.
