Nerkin Agulis / Lower Aylis

(Armenian: Ներքին Ագուլիս, Azerbaijani: Aşağı Əylis) is a village at the territory Ordubad region of Nakchivan Autonomous Republic of modern Azerbaijan, at 3-3.5 km west of district center Ordubad. The population of 4282 people. (2009). During the Armenian massacres of 1988 in Nakhichevan Autonomous Republic of Soviet Azerbaijan, last remains of native (Armenian) population of the village was ceased to exist and a few Armenian churches were blown up by Azeris. Prominent Azerbaijani wrighter and Nobel prize laureate and fighter for justice: Akram Aylisli wrote about that events at his book "Dreams of Stones". At the XIXth century Upper and Lower Agulis was Armenian town in Erivan province of Russian Empire but later became the scene of Armenian-Tatar clashes. At 1918-20 belonged to Democratic Republic of Armenia. In 1920 separated from Armenia and handed to newly formed Azerbaijani SSR by Bolsheviks. At early middle ages there was Armenian village of Nerkin Agulis.
