The monument was built in honor of Bulgarian kings Asen, Petar, Kaloyan and Ivan Asen II. During their reigns Bulgaria achieved its greatest prosperity and mighty.
It was unveiled in 1985 during the national celebrations of 800 years since the rebellion of the two brothers Asen and Petar after which Tаrnovo was proclaimed as a capital of the Second Bulgarian State (1185 - 1393). This is one of the most impressive monuments in Bulgaria.
The monument is better known as the "Riders" because it displays four warriors sitting on their horses, each of them looking in a different direction, with a huge sword rising to the skies in the middle.
