In 1941 Lord & Taylor opened in Manhasset, the first branch of a Fifth Avenue department store to open anywhere, making it historically the first branch store in America. Designed in the Modern style by Starrett & Van Vleck in collaboration with Raymond Loewy who also designed the platform shelters for the Floral Park LIRR station as well as countless industrial items throughout his career. Much of the rear parking space was a Shelter Rock Road estate that was eventually purchased by the store and demolished, as more parking was needed by the 1950s. Caldwell & Scott was the contractor.

A 2016 addition designed by Highland Associates and constructed by E.W. Howell & Co. added a two-story glass atrium to the store which was the first major renovation since 1986. The store closed for good in 2021 when the chain liquidated. It has been reopened by Hudson's Bay Company with WeWork as a co-working space.
