With a population of more than 200,000 people, it is a grade I municipal corporation[4] located at a distance of 51 kilometres (32 mi) from Kadapa town.
It is famous for its celebrations during the Vijaya Dasami festival and is considered second only to Mysore when it comes to these celebrations. The city is referred to as the "Second Bombay" because of the volume of gold and cotton business that happens there.
It has famous Sufi Saint (Sha Hussian vali) Darga, largely know as Chausain Vali Darga. It is located in the herat of the city near Gold Market.
It is known for varieties of evening snack items (e.g. Mirchi Bajji, Cut Mirchi, Rice Puffs Mixture and various other sweets and hot snacks) with mouthwatering taste. Various stalls boast this trend in the town. Kunda Biryani is very famous in Proddatur, Tangedu Palley sweets are made in Proddatur, using a special ghee.
