With an area of 70.13 sq. kms, Laokhowa Wildlife Sanctuary is located in the southern bank of the river Brahmaputra, about 25kms away from Nagaon town. Also known as Laokhowa Abayaranya, it is a part of the Laokhowa-Burachapori ecosystem and has richness and diversity in flora and fauna. Best time to visit is between November and March as the rest of the season is rainy.
It is an ideal habitat for one-horned rhino and wild buffalo. Besides endangered & threatened species like Wild Boar, Leopard Cat, Civet Cat, Hog Deer, Black Deer, Elephant, Tiger etc are found here. Home for about 225 species of birds, most notably the endangered Bengal Florican. Besides being sources of drinking and bathing for the wildlife, the waterbodies in the sanctuary like the Roumari Beel support various species of fish and amphibians.
