New neighbourhood built on the site of the former Horton Psychiatric Hospital.

Horton Asylum opened in 1902 in buildings designed by G.T. Hine, Architect to the Commissioners in Lunacy. During the two world wars it was commandeered as a military hospital and the patients were transferred elsewhere. After the War the hospital played an important role in the development of Induced Malaria Therapy used to cure General Paralysis of the Insane (an advanced symptom of syphilis) as well as the treatment of Malaria itself. After 1971 the NHS gradually reduced patient numbers, finally closing it in 1997.

It has now been redeveloped, although the chapel, tower and superintendent's house remain derelict.
