Mannar Dweep

Sri Lanka / Mannarama /

Mannar Island, formerly called Manar Island, is part of Mannar District, Sri Lanka. It is linked to the rest of Sri Lanka by a causeway.

Between 1914 and 1964, there was a train and ferry link from mainland India via Dhanushkodi and Talaimannar to Colombo, but this was not resumed after the disastrous damages caused by a cyclone in 1964.

The island is dry and barren; fishing is economically important.

  • Are the years correct? When a little boy myself I took the night mail train with my family to thalaimannar. This was around 1977. The ferry still operated at that time. I know for sure. I remember certain things I received from that ship such as nice horlicks taste biscuits, very nice tasting toffees in tins. Also remember the "Karola Waadi" (dry fish huts) which we dreaded to go as there were warnings that small children are caught and put to work in these places. I guess these were some of the cultural elements that started off the LTTE.
