State Correctional Institution at Pittsburgh (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania)

USA / Pennsylvania / Bellevue / Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania / Beaver Avenue, 3001

This state prison was officially "mothballed" in January 2005.

SCI Pittsburgh, formerly known as Western Penitentiary, is Pennsylvania's oldest operating correctional institution. Opened in 1882, the facility is located on 21 acres of land with approximately 12 acres located inside the walled perimeter. The facility is located on the banks of the Ohio River, approximately five miles from downtown Pittsburgh.

It was reopened again -- as a facility housing minimum to lower-medium security male inmates needing alcohol and other drug treatment -- in June 2007.
