The city of Khairagarh was formed as a sub-division of Rajnandgaon district. Administered by a nagar panchayat, Khairagarh city is facilitated by primary health centers, schools and a wide network of roads and railway tracks. Indira Kala Sangit Vishwavidyalaya is a State administered University, located at Khairagarh in Chattisgarh. It was established in 1956.When this University was set up in 1956, the rulers of princely state of Khairagarh gifted their palace to establish a University of Music and Fine Arts. His Majesty Late Raja Birendra Bahadur Singh and Her majesty Late Rani Padmavati Devi named this University ` Indira` after their daughter who was also passionately fond of music.
Indira Kala Sangit VishwavidyalayaThis is the only university of performing and visual arts in Southeast Asia. The University offers courses related to various art forms such as classical vocal music (Hindustani and Carnatic), classical instrumental music (Hindustani and carnatic), classical dance styles (Kathak and Bharatanatyam), folk dance and music, painting, sculpture and graphics. It also teaches subjects such as History of Indian art and culture and various literatures. The University imparts education and conducts researches in Indian Performing Visual Art forms. The University has a museum, which is an essential part of the Department of History of Indian Art and Culture. The museum is also enriched with archaeological remnants and art souvenirs.
In order to reach Khairagarh through road, one has to take the route of National Highway number six which intersects the district of Rajnandgaon. Rail services are also available from the district and the closest air terminal is 80 km away from Rajnandgaon at Raipur.
