Long Hill (Saskatoon)

The roadways known as the "Long" and the "Short" hills were both cut out of the slope of the river valley. Loaded wagons and street cars could not manage the steep Short Hill, but used the more gradual Long Hill between the Broadway Bridge and the Traffic Bridge. Even the Long Hill was difficult for streetcars. In the winter months, "black ice" coated the rails, and the city kept a watchman at the foot of the hill to keep the tracks sanded.

The worst accident occurred on March 3, 1922. A car attempting to turn off the hill onto the bridge left the rails, slid across the southbound tracks, glanced off a telephone pole and plunged over the bank, turning over and tearing the roof off on a guywire as it fell. Fortunately it landed right side up before collapsing. None of the 20 passengers were killed, but 10 were injured and the streetcar was destroyed.
