The Ground was the training ground for the Royal Artillary from 1848 till 1933. In January 1858, it was the scene of executions of mutineers of the 1857 war of independence. More than 100 mutineers from garrisons at Mardan, Nowshera and Peshawar were executed here. Some were blown from guns, the rest were hanged from the makeshift gallows erecetd for the purpose. The executions continued for three days in the afternoons, watched by the British personnel and their families from the nearby Royal Artillary garrison.
