Sululagi M. Palega, Jr. was a much-loved young Samoan athlete and community activist who played ball at the recreation center that now bears his name. In Modesto for a basketball tournament in 1994, he was the victim of a random shooting. The Sululagi M. Palega Recreation Center was named in his honor.
