Site of the Dolgoruky manor which was part of the Prechistenka Palace of 1775.

Moscow's first grammar school was established in 1783. It was organized as a provincial men's grammar school in 1804 and moved to this site in 1819.

In the 1830s management of the grammar school was transferred to the Moscow educational district. In 1831 the building was attached to the house on Volhonka, 18. In May 1836 Pushkin visited M.A.Okulova, the director of a grammar school.

In 1860s the first grammar school was divided into two schools because of the overflow of pupils the have divided on two. One of them has kept former number, and the other received the name of the fifth grammar school. By 1918 this grammar school had graduated approximately three thousand students.

In this grammar school M.P.Pogodin, A.N.Ostrovsky, V.I.Ivanov and others studied.
