The Leicester Infirmary (it did not become 'Royal' until 1912) was designed by Benjamin Wyatt & Son of Lichfield and opened in 1771. It was built on the site of the medieval chapel of St Sepulchre and paid for by private subscriptions and events such as musical concerts. At the entrance to the drive stood the fine wrought-iron gates from Quenby Hall. These are now on display in the gardens of Newarke Houses Museum.
