633 Third Avenue (New York City, New York)

USA / New Jersey / West New York / New York City, New York / Third Avenue, 633
office building, skyscraper, 1961_construction, International style architecture

558-foot, 39-story International-style office building completed in 1961. Designed by Harrison & Abramovitz, it is clad in grey-green glazed fascia brick, green metal spandrels, and glass. It was formerly known as the Continental Can Building, but now simply goes by its address. In 1993 the upper nine floors were offered as office condominiums, to be purchased by companies instead of leased.

The west facade on 3rd Avenue has two 10-story wings projecting forward and flanking the main tower. Both of the wings have four bays of windows separated by uninterrupted brick piers, as well as one bay on the inward-facing side wall, while the main central tower has ten bays. The ground floor of the wings has metal-and-glass storefronts; at the center section there is a double-height main entrance of glass and steel.

On the north and south facades, the wings extend back for 12 bays to a shallow setback above the ground floor, above which the "rear wings" rise seven floors before a setback to the rest of the rear tower base, which sets back above the 11th floor to the main tower. The north and south faces of the main tower span 17 bays. There is a taller mechanical level with black metal vents in place of windows at the 11th floor of the rear base, and on all four facades at the top floor of the tower.

Framing the main entrance, the ground floor has storefronts around most of the building, except for freight entrances at the east end of the south facade, and along the east facade, which borders the northernmost block of the Tunnel Exit Street. Here the ground floor is a brick wall with metal louvers across the top.

The storefronts are occupied by Docks Oyster Bar & Seafood Grill, an entrance to New York Sports Club (on basement level), and a Chase Bank branch.
