In 1946, the Crown-owned mining company Eldorado Mining & Refining Ltd. began exploring the area for uranium deposits, and opened mining operations soon after. Established in 1952 to service the mines in the Beaverlodge uranium area, Uranium City grew to a community of nearly 5000 people, almost large enough to become a city.
The town prospered until 1982, when the Eldorado company abruptly announced that all mining operations would cease. Being the town's only source of income, the mine closure resulted in total economic collapse. The town rapidly depopulated, and there are now only about 70 people left. Homes, businesses and public buildings were simply abandoned. It is considered a modern ghost town, with most of its buildings in ruins from weathering or vandalism.
