  • This is the last "Roman" monument added to the Forum. Emperor Phocas was a usurper who never set foot in Rome. He overthrew the Emperor Maurice and ruled from Constantinople. He turned out to be a tyrant and managed to lose a good portion of the Eastern part of the Empire to the Persians. He was overthrown yb Heracilus, who after a long war regained the lost provinces (only to soon lose most of them to the rising Islamic power)
