In 1882, following a tour of duty in the Civil War as Ohio Volunteers, Alvin M. Woolson and his brother, William A. Woolson, founded the Woolson Spice Company in Toledo, Ohio. The wholesale business grew to rule the U.S. market and eventually produced Lion Coffee, the second largest coffee company of its time and the first particular product brand to be mass-marketed in the U.S. via a huge advertising campaign. Simultaneously, small mercantiles were opened by family members throughout Ohio and in other midwestern states. The large wholesale tea, spice and coffee operation was sold in 1897.
