These two buildings - now with shop front extensions to street line - date back to 1845 and are quite a lot older than any other buildings around (apart from The Chestnuts, a short distance to the North East). Before the station was built and when this area was all fields, The Chestnuts was a farmhouse, and these two cottages - back then standing isolated, with a stream in front that roughly followed the path of St John's Road - were labourer's accommodation. They have survived despite all the odds, but are barely recognisable now - in about 1890 the shopping street was created and the villas were more or less incorporated into it.
