  We knew this place as the Palembang Golf Club. In 1948 there were only nine holes. Since I was only 10 years old I got to play from the ladies tees so number four only had to cross one water hole. Great memories here of the bamboo grove near the first tee and the views from the club house. I recall one afternoon Herve Long hit an errant tee shot off number three and wound up in the middle of fairway #2 just as my father and I were coming up two. My dad hit a low liner that caught Herve right in the chest - we thought he was done for sure but Herve yelled at my dad and my dad yelled at Herve and all ended well. Thirty years later, in Portland, Oregon, I saw Herve and he still had the dimple marks on his chest where the golf ball had hit him.
