Sicily Drop Zone

Sicily is the largest DZ at Ft. Bragg at half a mile wide and two and half to three miles long. Other drop zones included Holland, Normandy, St Mere Eglise, Salerno, and All American. Most drop zones seemed to get their name from famous Combat Jump sites of WWII.

  • Sicily Drop Zone is the name of the drop zone when flown from north to south. When the jump is scheduled to fly from south to north, the name of the drop zone is "Gela". All drop zones are renamed this way for the DZSO to properly set it up.

  • OK, what happened to Nijmegen drop zone at Bragg? Nothing like a night jump on Nijmegen which is somewhat larger than a postage stamp. Jack Wilson
  • My memories of that DZ...from the mid 1980's...it SUCK's! It is extremely small and was pretty overgrown at that time. The only DZ that was worse was at Camp Mackall, but I can't remember the name
  • I had my worst jump at Nijmegen but it was my fault for having a weak exit. Dwayne I think you're referring to Rhine-Luzon or "Stump-Luzon" on Mackall. And, yes it deserves that nickname. After I did my PLF I saw I landed about 5" from a 3'X4" stump. I could have been impaled!
