The Miksch House, built of logs in 1771 and covered in clapboard and painted soon thereafter, was the first house built in Salem to be occupied by a single family. Prior to this time, the First through Fifth Houses, located further north on Main Street, had been constructed as shared living spaces for the first settlers of Salem.

Matthew and Henrietta Miksch, and daughter Martha, lived here and sold products from here that included gingerbread, candles, processed tobacco and snuff -- and they eventually sold the bread made by the Single Brothers to Single Sisters.

The small, snug house is an excellent example of the simple family life in the early days of Salem. It also features a "manufactory" built of logs to its rear and an extensive family garden..
