museum, house, NRHP - National Register of Historic Places, 1760s construction, historic landmark
Many of the Salem craftsmen were single brethren so, early in the settlement, the Single Brothers House was built. The right-hand section, done in half-timbered construction, was raised in 1769. Later, when expansion was needed, an all-brick section came along in 1786.
The single brothers lived, ate and many of them worked in this building, or in the Workshop just down the hill or the gardens to the rear of the building going towards Salem Creek. Eventually, the brothers also operated a tannery, slaughterhouse and brewery/distillery further to the west near the creek.
Today, many of the skills are demonstrated and workrooms are shown in this building, including a pewter-tin shop, joiners' and turners' rooms, tailor, pottery, blue dying -- and the common areas such as the kitchen, Saal (worship space) and dining room.
