The place was first a Research Station of Erich Regener he had lost his institute in Friedrichshafen due to a air raid and he moved to Weissenau in 1944. The Institute became part of the Kaiser Wilhelm Society and some time after the war it became the Max Planck Institute for Physics of the Stratosphere in 1952. After the death of Regener Julius Bartels moved the institute to Lindau in Lower-Saxony where already a Max Planck Institute Ionosphere Research was located. The location was further used and by 1959 the University of Tübingen with Richard Mühleisen used the location for research of the physics of the atmosphere the location was closed after the death of Mühleisen in 1988.
