Fort Lyon was a civil war era fort that was part of the defenses of Washington and was the largest fort in the Huntington area. Fort Farnsworth was nearby. The remains of the earthworks of these forts were visible until well into the 1900s. Part of the Fort Lyon is now the site of the Huntington Metro station. President Lincoln visited Fort Lyon after an accidental explosion killed several soldiers. There were five civil war forts in this area. (Fort Farnsworth was nearby -- note streetnames; Fort O'Rorke, Fort Weed, and Fort Willard (now a small park) to the southeast).
