Old Mirpur (Under Mangla Dams Water)

The old city of mipur now lies under the mangla dam (azad muslim kashmir). by Jhangir Mohammed

my grandaparents told me that before the old city bacame part of the dam project muslims, hindus and sikhs lived together in relative harmony. also that many came to each others' aid during the upheaval of the partition of 1947.

Actually pre partition Mirpur was a thriving town for Khatris and Dogras and the local Raja's who were on good terms with ruling Dogra's. The dogars were fine clever fellows who used local Raja's to collect revenue from farming peoples. For their service Raja's were given grants to fertile lands and the use of Dogar soldiers to quiten any rebelious people. Not that anyone rebelled in Mirpur but some Jat's from district Gujrat used to give trouble to Raja's by organising raiding and taking away cattle and goods from Dogar ruled areas. Jat's from Gujrat were a rebelious and tough lot and not far from Mirpur used to come to Chech'ian and give trouble esp to the karhi Raja's. Even to this day Karhi Raja's are weary of Gujratias.

very true sir. im to know this that people like thathals and racheyals settle in this district in last 200 years but their real home from district gujrat near to karian. thathals are sub tribe of bhatti rajpute from gujrats and they was somtimes trouble makers

the old city mirpur was beauty fully plnned the people were living in piece and harmony our beatyful history is taken away by building this evel mangla dam which is imposed by pakis when i go in my child hood i miss the old city
