The Monument to the Soviet Army is a monument located in Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria. There is a large park around the statue and the surrounding areas. It is a popular place where many young people gather. The monument is located on Tsar Osvoboditel Boulevard, near Orlov (Eagle) Bridge and the Sofia University. It represents a soldier from the Soviet Army, surrounded by a woman and a man from Bulgaria. There are other, secondary sculptural compositions part of the memorial complex around the main monument. The monument was built in 1954.

  • A small boat found itself in the center of an enormous storm, what could it do to survive? I think almost all Bulgarian governments in modern time regardless of their ideology have acted wisely to keep Bulgaria as unharmed as possible. Yet every casualty hurts, but just think about 40 million people killed in WW2. The German could kill, so did the Russian. But Bulgaria came out almost intact from the war.Wasn't it a miracle? Or a quiet victory? History is not written only in black and white. We should be even-handed when judging the merits and demerits of a time, a generation or a system.
  • This grotesque monument was built in 1954 to remind the Bulgarian people that any resistance to the ruthless communist regime would be crushed by the Red Army. 45 years of soviet controlled puppet regime brought Bulgaria to almost a total economic and demographic collapse. In the long run, the damage to Bulgarian economy, culture, mentality, religion and way of life is often seen as the worst national catastrophe in Bulgarian history.
  • Bulgarian mentality has laid the foundations to this disaster. Lack of culture and common sense has always plagued Bulgarians, they have never had any social sense. Almost all suffer from the same - the Bulgarian does things for himself. Westerners do things to set an example. At least most of them. Every people deserve their rulers, as shown by history. History is continually showing this even today, as we are ruled exactly as we deserve - like animals. Because we are. And this is a monument to our animality. And it HAS to stand! To remind us and future generations how close we were to being crushed in a world conflict AND how long before that we were already dead...
