Russia / Moscow / Moscow / ulitsa Ilyinka
interesting place, Russian Orthodox Church, 16th century construction, object of cultural heritage of federal importance (Russia), Orthodox church

This is the church for which this street is named. The narrow church with its single dome and rounded zakomari gables originally dates to 1520. Redesigned in the 18th century to fit between two warehouses, this structure is the only vestige of St. Elijah's monastery that was originally constructed by merchants from Novgorod. In 1497 when Novgorod was an independent state, Ivan the Great relocated about five hundred ranking families to Moscow and gave them land here for a compound. Currently the building is undergoing restoration.
