Carcar

Carcar, officially the City of Carcar, (Cebuano: Dakbayan sa Carcar; Tagalog: Lungsod ng Carcar), or simply known as Carcar City, is a 5th class city in the province of Cebu, Philippines. According to the 2015 census, it has a population of 119,664 people.

  • Known for its famous chicharon, Carcar prides itself to be the heritage town of the province. Though it has acquired its city status, its rich culture and history continue to make Carcar one of the must-go-to places in Cebu.
  • Long before the chicharon, Carcar had been known for its 'ampaw'. As a child way back 60 years ago, I could remember buying ampaw from street hawkers as the bus I am riding on took a short stop in the town's rotunda.
  • Patron saint of Carcar City is Saint Catherine of Alexandria celebrated every Novenber 24.
  • Kabkaban Festival is in conjunction with the fiesta of St. Catherine of Alexandria, the town's patron saint. It is a cultural catalogue of the town's historical past. Among the highlights of the festival which was named after Carcar's old name Kabkab which is a kind of fern, is the street dancing and parade.
