California Route 120 began as a pack trail from Stockton into the goldrush country about 1849. By 1874 it was a dirt road that took wagons all the way into Yosemite Valley. The final extention up and over 9,943 foot Tioga Pass to Mono Lake was completed in 1915 and by 1937 most of it was paved. Most of the highway is referred to by Caltrans simply as RTE 120, but the 45 miles leading west from Lee Vining is known as Tioga Pass Road.
Tioga Pass is closed with the first snow of Winter, but the road is usually re-opened by Memorial Day.

  • The Gas station at the corner with 395 has an excellent restaurant inside that serves gourmet quality meals that one would expect from an expensive hotel. There are also dining tables outside that offer a great view of Mono Lake.
