Incirlik Air Base (LTAG)


Incirlik Air Base is an important base in NATO’s Southern Region. As a prime staging location, Incirlik offers a 10,000-foot main runway and 9,000-foot alternate runway, both sitting amidst 57 hardened aircraft shelters.

In the 1950's this base was used to stage B52s for attacks on the USSR. Johny Powers was based here for his U2 flights over the USSR although he took off from Iran on the last flight over the USSR (and was shot down). Today it is an important facility for stagging to Iraq.

Facts from primary sources and personal experience. Primary sources were military personnel who worked with Powers. I used to like to watch the B52s take off because the wings took off before the fuselage.
