Situated on the site of a Paleochristian basilica. Construction began during the Romanesque period but was finally completed during the Gothic period, which is the dominant style.
The outside of the building is sombre, decorated only with the vertical buttresses. The door of Sant Iu has some decorative elements recovered from the previous Romanesque building. The new Gothic building is representative of the so-called Catalan Gothic. Thus, the interior naves are at nearly the same height, which causes the impression of being in a single site. The lateral chapels have an upper gallery, providing the premises with greater light and openness. The dome base is covered on the inside with handcrafted woodwork. The main façade was built recently (late 19th century, early 20th century), although based on a project from 1408. The door from the cloister to the cathedral and the chapel of Santa Llúcia (Romanesque) are of great interest. The cloister floor is full of collective burials of medieval craftmen.

My lord- will the scaffolding ever come down. went to see the cathedral last Spring and this May and the facade was completely obscured by the steel skeleton. | ||||
