Built in 1898, the northern third of the building was originally the Carlton Hotel. The southern 2/3 housed the Patrick Thompson department store, also known as P.T.'s. The store was renamed Arnott's in 1976, before closing in 1982. It was converted to an extension of the hotel in 1984.
