Sometimes called as Little Hong Kong, Sandakan is the second largest city in the Malaysian state of Sabah. It is located on the east coast of the state. It used to be the capital of North Borneo. History recalls that Sandakan used to be named 'Elopura', meaning beautiful city.

Sandakan is well known for its seafood, and also as a stop-over for eco-tourism activities, as well as one of the major ports in the country. The city faces the Sulu sea and has hilly terrain at certain zones. Development is spreading away from the city centre itself over the years and nightlife outside the CBD is vibrant. There are plenty of commercial centres, hotels, and even a Malaysian supermarket chain here, Giant; in this city.

Public buses operates along major roads in the city, and taxi services are available too. The city areas are well connected with new road and highways, one of them being the Northern Ring Road. Sandakan is easily reachable from connecting 45 minute flights from the state capital, or by road which will take about 6 hours on average.
