More than any other, it was this section of the M8 which proved the most controversial, and ultimately resulted in the Inner Ring Road scheme being abandoned half way through, thus saving Tradeston and what we nowadays know as the Merchant City from partial destruction.
Old Anderston, having been decimated of its population after being declared a Comprehensive Development Area (CDA), was largely bulldozed to make way for the motorway - the original heart of the area - Anderston Cross - was quite literally wiped off the map. To make room for cars, what remained of the population were stacked vertically in concrete housing estates on either side of the motorway. The two were supposed to be connected by the infamous pedestrian "Bridge to Nowhere" that was never completed.
