Amtali Upazila (Barguna district) with an area of 720.76 sq km, is bounded by Patuakhali sadar upazila on the north, Kalapara upazila and the Bay of Bengal on the south, Galachipa upazila on the east and Burishwar river on the west. Main rivers are Burishwar and Andarmanic.

The location of Amtoli town is 22.1390939N 90.2292221E. Amtali (Town) The town is now a municipality with an area of 12.25 sq km and population 14276; male 52.74%, female 47.26%. It has 17 wards and 17 mahallas. Literacy rate among the town people is 46.4%. The town has 2 dakbungalows.

Gulishakhali thana, established in 1859 was shifted to Amtali in 1901. Amtali thana was turned into an upazila in 1982. The upazila consists of 10 union parishads, 66 mouzas and 186 villages.

Archaeological relics and monuments: Tomb of Kazi Kalu at Tepura and clay fort at Chaora Patakata (Mughal period).

As of the 1991 Bangladesh census: Population 244438; male 50.39%, female 49.61%; Muslim 92.45%, Hindu 6.60%, Christian 0.05%, Buddhist 0.86% and others 0.04%; ethnic nationals: rakhain, at Barabogi and Pachakoralia union.

Religious institutions: Mosque 440, temple 80, pagoda 13 and tomb 8.

Literacy and educational institutions: Average literacy 33.9%; male 39.5%, female 28.1%. Educational Institutions: college 4, collegiate school 2, high school 27, junior school 13, madrasa 43, government primary school 101, private primary school 97. Important among these are the Amtali Degree College (1969) and Amtali Pilot High School (1934).

Cultural organisations: Rural club 26, public library 1, theatre group 2, literary society 1, women's organisation 26, cinema hall 3.

Main occupations: Agriculture 56.79%, fishing 3.41%, agricultural labourer 17.21%, wage labourer 3.09%, commerce 7.14%, service 2.81%, others 9.55%.

Land use: Cultivable land 38250.01 hectares; single crop 62.79%, double crop 25.40% and treble crop land 11.81%; land under irrigation 32.45%.

Land control: Among the peasants 38.9% are landless, 2.33% marginal, 3.91% small, 37.9% medium and 16.96% rich.

Communication facilities- Roads: pucca 35 km, semi pucca 25 km and mud road 1050 km; waterways: 239 nautical mile.

Manufactures- Saw mill 18, flour mill 10, soap factory 1, pen-manufacturing factory 2;

Cottage industries: Weaving 191, wood work 190, can work 97, blacksmith 45, potteries 8 and oil grinder 16.

Hats, bazars and fairs Hats and bazars are 38, most noted of which is the cattle market at Gazipur; noted fair- Gazi Kalu Mela.

NGO activities: Operationally important NGOs are CARE, brac, asa, proshika, Dhaka Ahsania Mission, caritas, CMES, VOSD and DORP.
